5 Reasons Why You Must Have a Mentor

May 4, 2019

Have you ever felt like you were meant to do something amazing, or achieve a certain goal, but it always felt like something was blocking your way?

If you have, don’t worry, we’ve all felt like this at some point in our lives. Sometimes at multiple points in our lives!

You might think you can’t accomplish your goals but here’s a newsflash: you have everything you need inside of you right now to achieve your goals!

It’s just a matter of accessing your inner potential.

How do you do that?

In my opinion, it requires 3 crucial ingredients:

  1. Hard work

  2. Adaptability

  3. A mentor

I’ll go into details on hard work and adaptability in later posts. Today we’re going to focus on mentorship.

Why? Because compared to hard work and adaptability, mentorship is something you can only get externally.

You can cultivate a mindset of adaptability by yourself, and hard work is just a matter of effort and diligence. However, mentorship is the missing piece here that will help you attain your dreams.

Why should you get a mentor?

1. Personal training/coaching

A mentor is there to personally advise and train you. They prepare you for change and can give you great tips, tricks, and techniques to step up your game in business and in life! By sharing their expertise, advice, and experience, they build you up to where you want to be performing.

A great example is Margaret Thatcher, aka the Iron Lady, and first woman to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She had a voice coach to help improve her public speaking!

2. Fresh, new perspectives and ways of thinking

Talking with a mentor can be a reward on its own! By sharing your experiences together, you start to see how your mentor has approached various problems and topics. You’d be surprised how many similar experiences you’ve both had too!

By sharing their own lens, you can see how your mentor would navigate and solve a problem you’ve been having for a while! Your individuality creates a unique dynamic: only YOU have your relationship with your mentor, and nobody else!

3. They challenge you further

By sharing thoughts and ideas, you have more knowledge to progress further to your goal! Your mentor doesn’t tell you what to do, but challenges you to do things, giving you a space where you can safely experiment and learn more about yourself!

They might set smaller goals inside a project for you to achieve and report back on, or they might pose questions which you’ll answer in your own words. Regardless of the method, your mentor will challenge you to grow into the person you want to become.

4. You are accountable to them

Ever tried to go on a diet, or abstain from an unhealthy food all by yourself and then 3 days later you caved in? Or have you had a New Year’s resolution fall flat on January 2nd? A mentor will ensure you don’t fall off track. Their presence and continued support will keep you on-track for deadlines and due dates. After all, who has ever wanted to let their mentor down?

5. You have a trusted advisor

I remember one time I was having conflict within my project team. One of my team members was submitting work that was below quality. My mentor shared different conflict management methods she used before: corrective action, withdrawing from conflict, and discipline to name a few. After going through the different pros and cons of each, I decided corrective action as the best approach.

My mentor didn’t make the decision for me, but gave me options to decide upon. Her role as an objective third party that cautiously diagnosed problems gave me an edge in determining the most effective solution. Your mentor is there to help you through  the process and give you the space to make a clear decision from sound advice.

To quote Isaac Newton, “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Your mentor is there to advise, guide, and give room for growth.

No matter where you are life or career, if you have something you want to achieve or progress towards, a mentor will help you grow to get there faster!
